Derry woman sentenced for Manslaughter

Brentwood -  County Attorney Jim Reams announced today that Rockingham County Superior Court Judge Tina Nadeau sentenced Janice Upton, 4 Towne Drive, Derry (DOB 1/14/64) to 10 to 20 years at the NH State Prison for the death of Charles Jaynes .

Upton pleaded guilty to one Manslaughter charge arising from a drinking and driving incident on July 30, 2006 from a Sandown Police stop for erratic driving and speeding down Route 111 at a high rate of speed striking a car in Hampstead and killing Charles Jaynes and injuring Gertrude Jaynes.  Cars and motorcycles traveling on Route 111 had to evade Upton's speeding vehicle.

"The purpose of sentences like this is to deter drunk driving by sending a message that society will not tolerate this wanton behavior. Sentences like this combined with sobriety checkpoints, coordinated traffic enforcement and other law enforcement initiatives are helping to decrease highway deaths", said Reams.
